ALCOHOLIC Paul Gascoigne has jetted to the US and admitted to a clinic after star friends led by DJ Chris Evans teamed up to pay for emergency rehab.

Evans, ex-Three Lions team-mate Gary Lineker, Britain’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan and former England cricketer Ronnie Irani pledged a small fortune — as fans sent messages of support.
Old drinking pal Evans said: “It’s his only chance.”

Leave messages of support below or email gazza@the-sun.co.uk

The friends fear time is running out for the frail football legend.
Radio 2 star Evans was among pals shocked by Gazza’s grim appearance and increasingly bizarre behaviour.
Former Newcastle, Spurs and Lazio ace Gazza, 45, was taped sobbing, slurring and swearing at a charity appearance.

A source said: “Chris was deeply moved and decided to organise help straightaway. Everyone realised that if nothing was done Paul would be dead in a year.”
Evans — who enjoyed hell-raising nights with Gazza in the ’90s — contacted former Spurs striker Gary Lineker, TV’s Piers Morgan and ex-England cricketer Ronnie Irani. They are paying for £13,600 first class British Airways flights for Gazza and a carer as well as £6,000 a week for his treatment at the Meadows Rehabilitation Centre in Phoenix, Arizona.

He is expected to stay “months, not weeks”.
As trembling Gazza jetted out from Heathrow, Evans said: “A serious addict can only be helped if they really want to be. It is my understanding that as of approximately ten o’clock Monday morning Paul asked for that help.
“Then and only then could a select group of his friends begin to put into operation the latest phase in a long fight to rid him of his demons. It’s his only chance — but at least now he’s going to get that chance.”
TalkSPORT presenter and former England cricketer Ronnie Irani last night spoke of how he and Radio 2 presenter Chris Evans, a long-term friend of Gascoigne, the football legend’s flight to the centre in Phoenix, Arizona.

Irani also revealed the midfielder is struggling with life after what he described as “a mad six weeks”.
The radio presenter explained Gazza's recent behaviour drove him to seek help on the behalf of the former Tottenham and Lazio star.
He said: “I had a chat with [BBC radio DJ] Chris Evans and he just asked how we could help him
“We knew we just had to get him on this flight, out to the priory in Phoenix, we just had to get him on the plane.
“I called British Airways and explained the situation, that we had to get him out to Phoenix to get him some help. He needs it, and if not, who knows what’s going to happen?”
Irani revealed Gazza has received support from the Professional Footballers' Association which he has failed to take advantage of.
He added: "With Paul Gascoigne, I’ll be really honest with you, he’s had all the help he could possibly have right in front of him from the PFA.
“It’s tough. Mental health issues are a serious, serious subject.
“But sadly he’s not been able to help himself.

Hello! I have very Amazing Information for you.

The last lunar eclipse of 2012 is a deep penumbral eclipse with a magnitude of 0.9155.
It should be easily visible to the naked eye as a dusky shading in the northern half of the Moon.
Please Share This Opportunity So Everyone Can Enjoy.
Lunar eclipse of 2012

Can I see the eclipse?

To catch the entire event, one must be in Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, or east Asia. Observers in western Canada and the USA can also see the eclipse, with the moonset occurring sometime after mid-eclipse. Eastern Canada and the USA will miss the eclipse entirely since it begins after moonset.

When will the eclipse occur?

Here are the key times for the lunar eclipse:
  • Penumbral eclipse starts – 12:14:58 UT
  • Greatest eclipse – 14:33:00 UT
  • Penumbral eclipse ends - 16:51:02 UT
This eclipse will have a magnitude of 0.9155. The start of the eclipse will not be visible to the naked eye. For about 30 minutes before and after the eclipse’s maximum, a light grey shading will be seen along the moon’s northern limb.

Some more information from NASA:-
The first solar eclipse of 2012 occurs at the Moon's descending node in central Taurus. An annular eclipse will be visible from a 240 to 300 kilometre-wide track that traverses eastern Asia, the northern Pacific Ocean and the western United States. A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, that includes much of Asia, the Pacific and the western 2/3 of North America
The annular path begins in southern China at 22:06 UT. Because the Moon passed through apogee one day earlier (May 19 at 16:14 UT), its large distance from Earth produces a wide path of annularity. Traveling eastward, the shadow quickly sweeps along the southern coast of Japan as the central line duration of annularity grows from 4.4 to 5.0 minutes.
Tokyo lies 10 kilometres north of the central line. For the over 10 million residents within the metropolitan area, the annular phase will last 5 minutes beginning at 22:32 UT (on May 21 local time). The annular ring is quite thick because the Moon's apparent diameter is only 94% that of the Sun. Traveling with a velocity of 1.1 kilometres/second, the antumbral shadow leaves Japan and heads northeast across the Northern Pacific. The instant of greatest eclipse  occurs at 23:52:47 UT when the eclipse magnitude  reaches 0.9439. At that instant, the duration of annularity is 5 minutes 46 seconds, the path width is 237 kilometres and the Sun is 61° above the flat horizon formed by the open ocean.
The shadow passes just south of Alaska's Aleutian Islands as the central track slowly curves to the southeast. After a 7000 kilometre-long ocean voyage lasting nearly 2 hours, the antumbra finally reaches land again along the rugged coastlines of
southern Oregon and northern California
Redding, CA lies 30 kilometres south of the central line. Nevertheless, it still experiences an annular phase lasting 4 1/2 minutes beginning at 01:26 UT. It is already late afternoon along this section of the eclipse path. The Sun's altitude is 20° during the annular phase and decreasing as the track heads southeast. Central Nevada, southern Utah, and northern Arizona are all within the annular path.
By the time the antumbra reaches Albuquerque, NM (01:34 UT), the central duration is still 4 1/2 minutes, but the Sun's altitude has dropped to 5°. As its leading edge reaches the Texas Panhandle, the shadow is now an elongated ellipse extending all the way to Nevada. Seconds later, the antumbra begins its rise back into space above western Texas as the track and the annular eclipse end.

Missing April Jones
April Jones Murderd....bukhariwebs.blogspot.com

THE former lifeguard charged with the murder of April Jones cried when he appeared in court today.

Mark Bridger, 46, is accused of abducting and killing the five-year-old schoolgirl, who disappeared a week ago.
Bridger, who also allegedly perverted the course of justice, wept as he confirmed his named, age and address.
And his voice trembled when he confirmed he understood the charges at Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court this morning.
Bridger, who wore a blue jumper, was unshaven and had a flushed face when he appeared in the dock. He gazed down at the floor and avoided eye contact with anyone in the room.
He was remanded in custody and is due at Caernarfon Crown Court on Wednesday.
An angry crowd had gathered when Bridger left court more than an hour after the hearing.
They punched and kicked the police van taking him to a Manchester prison, shouting "scum" and "f****** kill him" as the vehicle sped away.
April, who has cerebral palsy and needs daily medication, was last seen on the Bryn-y-Gog estate in Machynlleth, Wales, last Monday.

She was spotted stepping into what is believed to have been a Land Rover Discovery.
Her parents Coral, 40, and Paul Jones, 44, had allowed her to play out late as a treat for getting a glowing school report.
A devastated Coral made an emotional plea for information on Wednesday, saying: “It’s been 36 hours since April was taken from us. There must be someone out there who knows where she is and can help the police find her.
“We are desperate for any news. April is only five years old. Please, please, help find her.”

AROUND 200 people were last night frantically searching for a missing five-year-old girl who was abducted while out playing near her home.

April Jones is believed to have been lured into a transit while playing on her bike with friends.
She was last seen climbing into the light-coloured vehicle which drove away at around 7.30pm, cops say.
Police said they were “increasingly concerned” for April, who is believed to have been wearing her blue school uniform.
Roadblocks were set up as villagers joined the search and friends posted messages on social websites appealing for help in Machynlleth, Mid Wales.

Mair Raftree posted on the Facebook site Find Missing APRIL 1-10-2012 Machynlleth Powys: “Please lets find my goddaughter safe and well x.”
Others sent their best wishes to April’s parents Coral Jones, 40, and Paul, 43.
Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Powell said: “Dyfed-Powys Police have launched an intensive search and criminal investigation into the abduction of April Jones.
"April was last seen playing on a bicycle near her home address and was seen getting into what we believe was a light-coloured van which then drove off.
“We are becoming increasingly concerned for her safety and ask for anyone with information to please contact us.”

Inspector Kevin Davies from Dyfed-Powys Police said “every angle” of the investigation was being covered.
He told the BBC that police dog teams were involved in the operation and that cars in and out of the town were being stopped and searched by officers.
A family liaison officer is also keeping the “devastated” relatives of missing April informed of any developments, Mr Davies added.
Restaurant boss Razul Islam said neighbours saw the youngster playing outside her home before she vanished.
He added: “There are hundreds of people out looking for her.”

“It is such a small town and nearly everyone is out looking for her - I’m shocked that it has happened in a town like this.”
He added: “The police and locals are patrolling on foot, everyone is just looking everywhere."
County Councillor Michael Williams also joined in the search efforts.
He told BBC Radio: “People were co-ordinated by the police and as well as searching the town they went out into forested areas of the valley and wooded areas and out into hamlets and byroads.

Speaking about April’s relatives he added: “They are such a lovely, caring family and they are devastated.
“The community is shocked and stunned over what’s happened.”
A number of volunteers were congregating at the town’s leisure centre this morning to continue the hunt, with maps of the area and pictures of April being handed to those offering their services.
Local petrol station worker Nerys Zjalic told ITV Daybreak that she had been drafted in to open the garage all night to assist with the search.
She said volunteers had flocked to the town to take part, adding: “One lady came in and she had come from Caernarfon, which is North Wales, so I suppose you are looking at 80-odd miles.
“She said ’I saw it on Facebook and I couldn’t sleep, so I came down’.”

Conservative cabinet minister Andrew Mitchell at bicycle
Article Source:- www.thesun.co.uk

COPS have called on foul-mouthed a Tory Chief Whip to resign after confirming that the millionaire minister launched an f-word rant at armed police.

Andrew Mitchell — newly-promoted by PM David Cameron — raged: “You’re f***ing plebs.”
The Prime Minister condemned Mr Mitchell after the The Sun revealed the outburst.
The Chief Whip apologised for his behaviour but insisted he did not use the words “plebs”.
However John Tully, Chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation has backed The Sun’s account after speaking to the abused officer.
Mr Tully reportedly said: “I know what the officer has told me and I know who I believe."
He then called for Mr Mitchell to go, saying: “He should resign. As a Cabinet Minister it’s unacceptable for someone of his standing to use such disrespectful and abusive language to a police constable let alone anyone else.
"If the shoe was on the other foot and my officer had said those things he’d be out of a job now. It’s double standards.
“Only a few days ago the Government was expressing support for the police in the wake of the officers’ deaths in Manchester, and then we have a very senior member of the Government saying that officers are plebs and morons.
“I know Mr Mitchell has apologised and that’s good, but it’s not enough."
The cycling Tory’s outburst came the day after two women PCs were shot dead.
Foul-mouthed Mr Mitchell yelled the four-letter abuse at cops because they wouldn’t let him pedal his bike out of Downing Street.
He exploded with fury when armed police guarding No10 refused to open the street’s famous gates.

The PC targeted by the tirade reported to his superiors that Mitchell told him: “Best you learn your f***ing place. You don’t run this f***ing government.
“You’re f***ing plebs.”
An eyewitness said Mr Mitchell, 56, also branded them “morons”.
Speaking on a visit to Greater Manchester Police headquarters in the wake of the murders of Pcs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes, Mr Cameron said: “What Andrew Mitchell said and what he did was not appropriate. It was wrong and it is right that he has apologised.
“He has obviously apologised to me, but more importantly he has apologised thoroughly to the police and that needed to be done.
“Police do an outstanding job across our country. They do a very important job protecting places like Number 10 Downing Street and I am very conscious of the protection they give to me and my family and the work they do for everyone in public life.

“I am eternally grateful for that and the police should always have our respect and our help and support and that is very, very important.
His disgraceful outburst on Wednesday evening came just 33 HOURS after PCs Bone and Hughes were shot dead in Manchester.
The Police Federation of England and Wales, which represents rank-and-file officers, today slammed Mr Mitchell saying it was “hard to fathom how someone who holds the police in such contempt could be allowed to hold a public office”.
Tourists and other members of the public looking in towards No10 heard the tirade and were left “visibly shocked” by it, the Downing St cop told bosses.
Mr Mitchell last night admitted he flew off the handle and was abusive. But he firmly denied using the word “plebs”.
The newly-promoted Tory lost his rag when police told him security rules mean they open the main gate as little as possible.
They tried to usher him through a side gate used by all pedestrians.
A source reported Mr Mitchell as saying: “Open this gate, I’m the Chief Whip. I’m telling you — I’m the Chief Whip and I’m coming through these gates.”
Despite his fury, the officers refused to budge and warned him that he would be arrested under the Public Order Act if he continued to abuse them.

Jack Wilshere in trouble
Jack Wilshere in trouble

ARSENE WENGER has revealed how Jack Wilshere struggled to come to terms with his 14-month KO.

The Arsenal midfielder missed the whole of last season and Euro 2012 after ankle and knee injuries.
And Wenger says the England star — who only turned 20 in January — showed great mental strength to see off the demons during a difficult time.
The Emirates chief said: “When you are so young and are out for 14 months it is a good test for your mental strength and on that front he has been absolutely brilliant.
“Not only did he have ankle surgery but when he thought that was over he had knee surgery and handled that very well also.
“But he had his ups and downs — and many downs because he had a few setbacks.
"It never crossed my mind (that he would never play again). Has it crossed his mind? Only he can answer that — yes, I think so.
“But I refused to give up, because he is a 19-year-old boy, so I always thought he would come back.
“He dealt with it very well and especially in the last three months he was highly focused.

“Every day he came in very early and worked all day through and he is rewarded now with a good condition.
“I believe what he has gone through will make him even stronger.”
Wilshere returned to full training for the first time yesterday. But Wenger says the club will not rush his return to the first team.
The Frenchman said: “We’ll have to be a bit patient with Jack and manage him well.
“I want to give him 10 days training before he plays his first game. He will need a few games in the reserves.
“It will take a few weeks but we will see how responds in the first two games in the reserves and see how he comes out of that.

Police died in attack

Article Source:- www.thesun.co.uk

TRIBUTES have poured in for the two women police officers murdered in Manchester yesterday.

PC Fiona Bone, 32, and PC Nicola Hughes, 23, were killed in a shocking gun and grenade attack after being lured into a lethal trap.
A minute's silence was held in honour of the two women at Greater Manchester Police HQ at 11am this morning.
The family of Nicola Hughes said that the brave copper "died doing the job she loved".
In a statement, her mother Susan, father Bryn and younger brother Sam, said: “Nicola was our only daughter and a beautiful child. She was always happy with life and lived for her family.
“She had an infectious personality and sense of humour and was a very caring and loving girl. When she left the house this morning she was going to the job she loved.
“Nicola always wanted to make a difference and, in doing so, she made such a big difference to everyone she knew. She cared about everyone and especially her colleagues.

“Nicola was only 23 years old and had the whole of her life in front of her.

“We cannot express how we feel today except to say we have always been exceedingly proud of Nicola and always will be. She knew she was loved by us all and we shall all miss her dreadfully."
PC Bone was described as a “calm, gentle woman” and an “excellent bobby” and had been in the middle of planning a civil ceremony for her same-sex partnership.
Her father last night called for the death penalty for her killer, saying: "He deserves to be hung."
Paul Bone, 64, broke down in tears and slammed the killer, saying: "He deserves to be hung but I know we will never get that."

The former RAF ground crew member continued: "Anyone who kills an officer should be hung."
The emotional outburst came as it emerged that the fugitive being quizzed over the murders was released on bail three months ago following a pub murder questioning.
Manchester United will wear black arm bands during their Champions League match against Galatasaray at Old Trafford tonight.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: “We are all deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two young policewomen protecting our community.
“Fiona and Nicola were highly valued members of Greater Manchester Police and the local community. Our thoughts and prayers are now with their families and friends at this devastatingly sad time."
PC Bone and PC Hughes died after answering a bogus burglary call at a house where Dale Cregan was holed up.
The front door opened and at least 13 shots were fired before a grenade was lobbed at them.

One-eyed Cregan, 29, wanted in connection with the gun and grenade murders of a father and son earlier this year, handed himself in at a police station less than two hours after the horror in Manchester.
Cregan was arrested in June in connection with the murder of Mark Short but was released on bail pending further inquiries.
man with one eye killed two female cops
Shocked cops wept as David Cameron called the murders “a despicable act of pure evil”.
Police chief Sir Peter Fahy said: “It would appear Cregan has deliberately done this in an act of cold-blooded murder.”
The violent deaths stunned the nation.
But the motive for such cold-blooded killings remained a mystery last night.
It had emerged Cregan threw a goodbye party for pals on Monday night. There had been rumours for weeks that he had been hiding out on the estate in Hattersley, Greater Manchester, where the policewomen were killed.
Cregan was held at Manchester Airport in June after flying back from Thailand and quizzed over the murder of amateur boxer Mark Short in May.
He was freed pending further enquiries.

A FAITHFUL dog has refused to move from his master’s grave for SIX YEARS, a family claims.

German Shepherd pet Capitan ran away after his owner Miguel Guzman died in 2006.
A week later Mr Guzman’s family went to pay their respects at his tomb and found the heartbroken hound sitting there, howling.
Since then the grieving dog has rarely left the spot at the cemetery.
Mr Guzman bought Capitan as a present for his 13-year-old son Damian in 2005 but died suddenly in March the next year.
When his family returned from the funeral Capitan was gone.
Mr Guzman’s widow Vernonica was today reported as saying: “We searched for him but he had vanished. We thought he must have got run over and died.

the most faithful dog
“The following Sunday we went to the cemetery and Damian recognised his pet. Capitan came up to us, barking and wailing, as if he were crying.
“We had never taken him to the cemetery so it is a mystery how he managed to find the place.
“We went back the next Sunday and he was there again. This time, he followed us home and spent a bit of time with us, but then went back to the cemetery before it started getting dark.
“I don’t think he wanted to leave Miguel on his own at night.”
Cemetery director Hector Baccega remembers the day he first saw the dog.

He said: “He turned up here one day, all on his own, and started wandering all around the cemetery until he eventually found the tomb of his master.
“During the day he sometimes has a walk around the cemetery, but always rushes back to the grave. And every day, at six o’clock sharp, he lies down on top of the grave and stays there all night.”
Mr Baccega said staff at the cemetery in Villa Carlos Paz, central Argentina are now feeding and taking care of Capitan.
Mr Guzman’s son Damian said: “I’ve tried to bring Capitan home several times, but he always comes straight back to the cemetery. I think he’s going to be there until he dies too. He’s looking after my dad.”

Capitan follows in the tracks of Hachiko, an Akita dog which is said to have waited at a Tokyo train station for its master to return each day for nine years from May 1925, following owner Hidesaburo Ueno’s death at work.

Randy Jackson, the last remaining original "American Idol
" judge, will return this winter for the show's 12th season, insiders confirmed on Monday. The last minute return of Jackson comes after talks broke off with singing star Enrique Iglesias.
Negotiations are also in the final stages with pop star Nicki Minaj and country crooner Keith Urban to join Mariah Carey and Jackson on the panel. Fox is expected to announce the new "Idol" judges' table by the end of the week.
Jackson was always expected to remain on "Idol" in some capacity — but as speculation about Iglesias heated up in recent weeks, it looked like Jackson might segue into a mentoring role on the show (similar to what music exec Jimmy Iovine already does on "Idol"). But sources say the "Idol" producers and Iglesias remained far apart on a deal (one source said Iglesias was asking for a salary in the eight-figure range), which is why Jackson was ultimately called back to judge duty. (According to one source, Minaj is expected to pull down around $10 million, while Urban is likely to make around $4 million.)
Jackson was instrumental in helping bring Carey (whom he co-manages) to "Idol," which is why his participation on the show in some capacity was never in doubt. But it wasn't clear until Monday what Jackson's role would ultimately be. The news was first hinted at earlier in the day by Jackson's former "Idol" colleague Simon Cowell, who Tweeted, "Just heard Randy is back on 'Idol'. Right decision."

The spiderweb pattern of cracks on the touch screen is becoming equally as iconic of an iPhone image as the silver Apple logo on the back.
"Sometimes they drop them as soon as they walk out of the store," said Gopal Gupta, a muscle-bound 42-year-old repairman sitting shirtless at a table in the pedestrian section of Broadway near 34th Street here. iPhone innards were spread before him as a customer who gave his name as Richard looked on.
naked cowboy iPhone repairman
This naked cowboy is iPhone repairman
Richard had the classic broken-screen problem and had gone to a nearby AT&T store seeking help. They sent him to Gupta. Thirteen minutes and 40 seconds after Richard handed Gupta the phone, he received it back with a fresh screen. Total cost: $52. A friend had been keeping time, and Gupta noted that it might have been a personal best — his previous record, he believed, had been 18 minutes.
Budget iPhone repair is an industry unto itself, but Gupta's business shows just how lean the operation can be. Most days he sits either at that spot or about 20 blocks down Broadway in Union Square Park. Word of mouth brings people to him. He also has a website at Repairs4Less

When it's hot, as it was on a sweltering Friday last week, Gupta takes his shirt off. If it rains, he goes to a Starbucks or McDonalds.
"I did an iPad repair in a bathroom because I needed a heating gun. So I used a hand dryer to take the glue off," said Gupta "Whatever way is necessary to do the job."
Meanwhile, his wife repairs iPhones from their home in Forest Hills, Queens.
[SEE ALSO: Getting iPhone 5 Won't Require Sleeping Outside Apple Store
Gupta, who doesn't own a smartphone (it's too expensive, he said), fell into the work two years ago when he lost his job repairing hospital medical equipment. He had already been doing computer repairs, and one day someone asked him if he could replace an iPhone screen.
Gupta mastered the operation, which is about 75 percent of his business, he reckons. But iPhone-related repairs, be they screen replacement, water damage or other issues, are about 90 percent of his business overall. Gupta offers to fix anything, including iPads, laptops and other smartphones, such as HTC models. The first time he works on a new type of device, Gupta does the repair for free, he said, acknowledging that the device is a "guinea pig."
Other phones are rare, however, even the iPhone's main competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S line. "It's like $200 for the [cost of the] screen," said Gupta. "I had only one customer come."
[SEE ALSO: First-Time Smartphone Buyers Prefer Android to iPhone
He's plenty busy with iPhones. "Sometimes I get so many calls I can't handle it," said Gupta. But that could all change, he said. If, as rumored, the iPhone 5 comes with a screen that uses the extra-durable Corning Gorilla Glass, screen repairs could be a rarity.
Gupta has fallback options, however, as his brand-new business card shows. One side of the card features photos of gadgets and advertises repair services. The other side depicts Gupta on a beach in swim trunks, showing his sculpted physique, with the words, "Personal Gym Trainer. Life Coach."

She's one of the biggest pop music sensations of all-time, but even Britney Spears got booed while judging the new season of Simon Cowell’s “The X-Factor,” which returns to Fox Wednesday night.
“It was hard for me at first, and then you gradually get used to it. It’s hard because they all boo you,” Spears told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “You have got 5,000 people behind you and they actually love everyone. So if you say no, they go crazy.”
In fact, the notoriously harsh Cowell even claimed that Spears’ striking ability to turn away contestants made him look like “a softie.”
“I actually came over as a softie. I would say yes, and [Spears and Demi Lovato] are looking at me like these people are never going to be stars,” he remarked.
So what does it take for Spears to say yes?
“The package. I want them to be able to perform, I want them to feel alive onstage, and of course the voice has to be amazing as well,” she said. “To combine all those three things is the ‘it’ factor for me… It’s a thrill and is so much fun when you actually see it, when you see someone come to life on the stage and deliver the way they are supposed to. It is just the best feeling.”

President Obama and Mitt Romney are taking a rare break from the campaign cycle, suspending negative ads for a day and keeping their remarks apolitical out of respect for the victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks -- as the nation marks 11 years since the tragedy.
Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and White House staffers observed a moment of silence Tuesday on the White House south lawn in memory of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Later in the afternoon, Romney will speak at the annual conference of the National Guard Association of the United States, whose members were deployed as part of the U.S. response to the attacks.
Vice President Joe Biden will mark the day at a memorial service at Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where one of the hijacked airliners crashed after passengers fought the terrorists. Biden grew up in nearby Scranton, Pennsylvania.
In a dramatic turn-around from the two previous presidential elections after the 2001 attacks, the race this year has been dominated by the economy rather than national security concerns.
Polls show Obama leading Romney on terrorism and national security issues, but both are a low priority for voters concerned about sluggish economic growth and an unemployment rate still above 8 percent.
A CBS News/New York Times poll conducted in July found just 37 percent of voters called terrorism and security extremely important to their vote, while 54 percent said the economy and jobs were uppermost.
In 2004, the first presidential election after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, about two-thirds of voters said protecting the country was more important than creating jobs when deciding their vote for president, according to an AP-Ipsos poll conducted shortly before that election. President George W. Bush defeated Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry in large part by convincing voters that he was the best candidate to keep the country safe.
That role now falls to incumbent Obama, who accepted the nomination for a second term at a Democratic convention that reminded voters at every turn that the president ordered the daring raid that killed Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden.

Parents who send their children to private schools in California are much more likely to opt out of immunizations than their public school counterparts, an Associated Press analysis has found, and not even the recent re-emergence of whooping cough has halted the downward trajectory of vaccinations among these students.

The state surveys all schools with at least 10 kindergartners to determine how many have all the recommended immunizations. The AP analyzed that data and found the percentage of children in private schools who forego some or all vaccinations is more than two times greater than in public schools.
More troubling to public health officials is that the rate of children entering private schools without all of their shots jumped by 10 percent last year, while the opt-out figures held steady in public schools for the first time since 2004.

Public health officials believe that an immunization rate of at least 90 percent in all communities, including schools, is critical to minimizing the potential for a disease outbreak. About 15 percent of the 1,650 private schools surveyed by the state failed to reach that threshold, compared with 5 percent of public schools.
vaccines for California parents
There were 110 private schools statewide where more than half the kindergartners skipped some or all of their shots, according to AP's analysis, with Highland Hall Waldorf School in Northridge -- where 84 percent opted out -- topping the list.

Parents cite a variety of reasons for not immunizing their children, among them: religious values, concerns the shots themselves could cause illness and a belief that allowing children to get sick helps them to build a stronger immune system. Likewise, there's no single explanation that accounts for why so many more parents who send their children to private schools apparently share a suspicion of immunizations.
Saad Omer, a professor of global health at Emory University in Atlanta who has studied vaccine refusal in private schools, surmised more private school parents are wealthy and have the time to spread five shots over a series of years and stay home should their child get an illness like chickenpox. Neal Halsey, a professor of pediatric infectious diseases at the Johns Hopkins University, said parents who choose private schools are likely to be more skeptical of state requirements and recommendations.

Bibi Reber, whose children attend the Waldorf-inspired Greenwood School in Mill Valley, had her children vaccinated only for what she sees as the deadliest diseases. Greenwood has a 79 percent opt-out rate among its kindergartners.
"I don't think dirt or getting sick makes you a weak person; your immune system needs to work with things," said Reber, whose children attend the Greenwood School in the San Francisco Bay area town of Mill Valley. "We certainly don't want to go back to having polio, but on the other hand, I don't think we need to eradicate all the childhood diseases.

Public health officials say that, regardless of why parents choose not to vaccinate their children, the result is the same: an increased risk of an outbreak of whooping cough or other communicable diseases.
"We're very concerned that those schools are places where disease can spread quite rapidly through the school and into the community, should it get introduced," said Dr. Robert Schechter, medical officer with the Immunization Branch of the California Department of Public Health.

That's what prompted the Legislature to approve a bill requiring parents to discuss vaccinations with a pediatricians or a school nurse before they can opt-out. Gov. Jerry Brown has until the end of September to sign or veto it.

State Assemblyman Richard Pan, a pediatrician, who sponsored the bill, said he believes private school parents are more apt to mistakenly believe that the vaccinations themselves could be more dangerous than the diseases.
"In private school, these are people who have money, who are upper middle-class, and they are going on the Internet and seeing information and misinformation," said Pan, D-Sacramento.
Increasing immunization rates for this population is critical to controlling the outbreak of diseases, he said. "Have you ever seen a child cough themselves to death? It's not pleasant," he said.
Those who choose not to vaccinate their children see the legislation as meddlesome and unnecessary.
"It's making an extra appointment and paying extra money to go in there and essentially get permission to do what I feel is right for my family," said Dawn Kelly, who sends her unvaccinated 5-year-old son and partially vaccinated 9-year-old son to Monarch Christian School in the Los Angeles area.

Like many parents who refuse some or all immunization shots, Kelly worries her children's immune system could be overwhelmed by getting too many vaccines at once.
Melani Gold Friedman, president of the parent association at Highland Hall Waldorf School, is concerned with what the legislation means for families who normally consult with acupuncturists, holistic healers or other alternative practitioners.
"The bill has an assumption that everyone's seeing one particular kind of doctor, but the people who are opting out, chances are they're not seeing that kind of doctor," she said.
Vaccination opt-out rates nationwide have been creeping up since the mid-2000s, spurred in part by the belief the battery of vaccinations routinely given to infants could lead to autism. Several major studies have discredited that idea.

Parents are allowed to forego vaccines for philosophical reasons in California and 19 other states. Of those, only Washington requires parents to consult with a physician. And, in California, there's no difference between private and public schools when it comes to what's required for parents to opt out -- they simply sign a document. The state recommends that kindergarteners receive five vaccine progressions, including protections against Polio, Hepatitis B and Measles.

Politicians and public health experts across the nation are focusing more attention on childhood immunizations, driven by a re-emergence of diseases like whooping cough. The U.S. is in the midst of what could be its worst year for that disease in more than five decades, with nearly 25,000 cases and 13 deaths.
After whooping cough reached epidemic levels in California in 2010, the state took action, embarking on a public information campaign and increasing the availability of vaccines. A law was passed requiring booster shots for older students.

Yet the opt-out rate continued climbing in private schools. It's more than doubled since 2004, to 2,228 kindergartners in last year's state survey. While the overall rate of full immunization among kindergarteners hovers around 91 percent, places where the opt-out rate is greater could pose a risk for outbreak.
In 2008, East Bay Waldorf School in El Sobrante closed temporarily after whooping cough sickened more than a dozen students, eight of them kindergartners. The San Francisco Bay Area school had a vaccination rate of less than 50 percent.

The U.S. government has halted flights home for Mexicans caught entering the country illegally in the deadly summer heat of Arizona's deserts, a money-saving move that ends a seven-year experiment that cost taxpayers nearly $100 million.
More than 125,000 passengers were flown deep into Mexico for free since 2004 in an effort that initially met with skepticism from Mexican government officials and migrants, but was gradually embraced as a way to help people back on their feet and save lives.
The Border Patrol hailed it as a way to discourage people from trying their luck again, and it appears to have kept many away -- at least for a short time.
But with Border Patrol arrests at 40-year lows and fresh evidence suggesting more people may be heading south of the border than north, officials struggled to fill the planes and found the costs increasingly difficult to justify. Flights carrying up to 146 people were cut to once from twice daily last year.
And this summer, there haven't been any.
"Everything comes down to dollars and cents," said George Allen, assistant chief of the Border Patrol's Tucson sector. "We're running into a more budget-conscious society, especially with the government."
He added: "Does it fit within our budget and is there an alternative that is not as effective but still effective?"
In an effort to keep the flights going, American authorities proposed mixing in Mexicans who commit crimes while living in the U.S. The Mexican government balked at seating hardened criminals next to families, elderly and the frail who recently crossed the border in search of work.
"Right off the bat, I can tell you that Mexico was not going to allow, nor will it ever allow, that kind of repatriation, which puts families' safety at risk," said Juan Manuel Calderon, the Mexican consul in Tucson.
U.S. and Mexican negotiators also discussed changing the route from El Paso, Texas, where many Mexicans with criminal records are held, to the central Mexican state of Guanajuato. In the past, the route has been from Tucson to Mexico City.
The flights may resume but not this year, U.S. and Mexican officials say.
They have operated only in the summer and only in Arizona, designed as a humanitarian effort in response to the many migrants who have died over the last decade trekking through remote deserts in debilitating heat.
U.S. Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Mexico Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire said in February that they planned to launch a pilot program April 1 to fly migrants arrested while living in the United States deep into Mexico. The pilot program was partly a response to complaints from Mexican border cities that too many deportees were being dumped on their streets and contributing to crime and unemployment.
"We wanted to maximize the flight and we couldn't come to an agreement," said Allen. "They were close. It may happen next year, but by the time it drug on, we got through July and for a short period of time, it wouldn't have been realistic."

The Mexican Interior Repatriation Program flights carried 125,164 passengers at a cost of $90.6 million since 2004, or an average of $724 each, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The flights ran as few as 38 days in 2009 and as many as 120 days in 2010, when a record 23,384 passengers were flown. Last year, there were 8,893 passengers flown at a cost of $5 million -- an average of $562 each.
The flights became a key piece of Border Patrol enforcement in Arizona as the agency moved to end its decades-old, revolving-door policy of taking migrants to the nearest border crossing to try again hours later.
The agency's new strategy, introduced in Tucson last year and later extended to the entire border, relies on tougher punishments that were rolled out in recent years. One calls for jail for up to six months and another one buses migrants to border cities hundreds of miles away to be deported there.
The one-way flights to Mexico City were aimed at first-time offenders and families. They were always voluntary and Allen said about 70 percent declined when they were introduced. But, as jail time and other punishments became more common, migrants increasingly jumped at the opportunity.
Without the flights, the Border Patrol is relying more on other punishments. It sends 70 people to federal court in downtown Tucson each weekday to face jail time. Deportation buses head east daily to Del Rio, Texas, and, when there are enough people to fill the seats, west to San Diego or Calexico, Calif.
Allen said Border Patrol data shows migrants who took the flights were less likely to be found again crossing the border illegally, though the agency has faced criticism for failing to release evidence of whether its tougher punishments are working.
In 2010, the Government Accountability Office said U.S. authorities had not shown the one-way flights were effective.
In Nogales, Mexico -- about 60 miles south of the cavernous Border Patrol station in Tucson where most migrants arrested in Arizona are taken -- more than a dozen deportees interviewed say they would accept a free flight home.
Juana Hernandez was dreading the two-day bus ride to her home in the central Mexican state of Michoacan and shared none of the Mexican government's objections to being seated alongside hardened criminals on a plane.
The flights appear to have discouraged migrants from crossing immediately after being deported but results over the long term were less clear.
Guillermo Martinez took a flight when he was deported a second time in 2010 but grew restless after an unsuccessful, two-year job search in his central Mexican state of Aguascalientes led to marital problems.
The Border Patrol arrested him in April with a group of 12 that agreed to pay a smuggler $1,500 each and spent nearly four months in county jail in Prescott, Ariz.
