THE former lifeguard charged with the murder of April Jones cried when he appeared in court today.
Mark Bridger, 46, is accused of abducting and killing the five-year-old schoolgirl, who disappeared a week ago.
Bridger, who also allegedly perverted the course of justice, wept as he confirmed his named, age and address.
And his voice trembled when he confirmed he understood the charges at Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court this morning.
Bridger, who wore a blue jumper, was unshaven and had a flushed face when he appeared in the dock. He gazed down at the floor and avoided eye contact with anyone in the room.
He was remanded in custody and is due at Caernarfon Crown Court on Wednesday.
An angry crowd had gathered when Bridger left court more than an hour after the hearing.
They punched and kicked the police van taking him to a Manchester prison, shouting "scum" and "f****** kill him" as the vehicle sped away.
April, who has cerebral palsy and needs daily medication, was last seen on the Bryn-y-Gog estate in Machynlleth, Wales, last Monday.
She was spotted stepping into what is believed to have been a Land Rover Discovery.
Her parents Coral, 40, and Paul Jones, 44, had allowed her to play out late as a treat for getting a glowing school report.
A devastated Coral made an emotional plea for information on Wednesday, saying: “It’s been 36 hours since April was taken from us. There must be someone out there who knows where she is and can help the police find her.
“We are desperate for any news. April is only five years old. Please, please, help find her.”
